Independent autopsy undetermined as DA addresses investigation

The family of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells is continuing to seek answers as investigators work to determine what happened during a July 4 trip to Horn Island, Mississippi.

Wells traveled to the barrier island with a group of friends but did not return with them to the mainland. His mother reported him missing that night, and a multi-agency search followed. His body was found in the water near the island on July 6.

Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter has said the investigation remains active. Authorities have said they do not currently have information indicating that a crime occurred, but the official cause and manner of Wells’ death have not been released.

The family’s unanswered questions

During interviews and a July 10 press conference, Wells’ parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, questioned why their son would have separated from the people he arrived with. They said doing so would have been inconsistent with what they taught him about safety.

The family and attorney Ben Crump have also pointed to differing accounts about whether Wells intended to return to the boat or remain on the island. They are seeking forensic review of his cellphone and clarity about why photos or videos from the outing were not present on his Snapchat accounts when relatives reviewed them.

Those concerns are allegations and questions raised by the family; investigators have not announced a finding that messages were deleted or that a crime occurred.

An independent review

The family has commissioned an independent autopsy and is conducting its own investigation. Crump has called for urgency and transparency while the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department continues its work. Ledbetter has said his office welcomes the independent review and shares the family’s goal of a thorough investigation.
